Background
Recommendations for promoting mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic include maintaining social contact, through virtual rather than physical contact, moderating substance/alcohol use, and limiting news and media exposure. We seek to understand if these pandemic-related behaviors impact subsequent mental health.
MethodsDaily online survey data were collected on adults during May/June 2020. Measures were of daily physical and virtual (online) contact with others; substance and media use; and indices of psychological striving, struggling and COVID-related worry. Using random-intercept cross-lagged panel analysis, dynamic within-person cross-lagged effects were separated from more static individual differences.
ResultsIn total, 1148 participants completed daily surveys [657 (57.2%) females, 484 (42.1%) males; mean age 40.6 (s.d. 12.4) years]. Daily increases in news consumed increased COVID-related worrying the next day [cross-lagged estimate = 0.034 (95% CI 0.018–0.049), FDR-adjusted p = 0.00005] and vice versa [0.03 (0.012–0.048), FDR-adjusted p = 0.0017]. Increased media consumption also exacerbated subsequent psychological struggling [0.064 (0.03–0.098), FDR-adjusted p = 0.0005]. There were no significant cross-lagged effects of daily changes in social distancing or virtual contact on later mental health.
ConclusionsWe delineate a cycle wherein a daily increase in media consumption results in a subsequent increase in COVID-related worries, which in turn increases daily media consumption. Moreover, the adverse impact of news extended to broader measures of psychological struggling. A similar dynamic did not unfold between the daily amount of physical or virtual contact and subsequent mental health. Findings are consistent with current recommendations to moderate news and media consumption in order to promote mental health.

This chart review examined the effects of effort on neuropsychological assessment and test performance patterns among genuine and exaggerating patients, with and without neurological findings, as aids to diagnosing symptom exaggeration. The sample consisted of 561 consecutive patients involved in compensation claims. With a flexible neuropsychological test (NPT) battery, the claims were assessed over 2 days. The sample included 303 patients evaluated for traumatic brain injury, 55 patients with neurological disease, and 203 patients assessed for other conditions (eg, depression or chronic pain). An average of 38 ability measures per patient were used to generate an overall NPT domain score. Composite scores were also computed for symptom validity tests, self-report measures of psychiatric symptoms, and memory complaint inventory. Seven NPT cognitive subdomain scores were multiply regressed onto the symptom validity test composite, accounting for 45% of its total variance. Patients were also assigned to Genuine or Exaggerator groups based on symptom validity test performance. The NPT for Exaggerating patients averaged 1.43 standard deviations below that of Genuine patients, suggesting that NPT scores for most Exaggerating patients are underestimates of their true ability. Factor analysis results differed between these groups. As a result, clinicians might avoid falsely identifying genuine patients as exaggerating by incorporating their self-reports of psychiatric symptoms and memory complaints into the diagnostic process.

In this article, we report the unique microstructural characteristics of YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO)/BaSnO3 (BSO) nanocomposite thin films on LaAlO3 (LAO) substrates. The BSO secondary phase grows as self-assembled vertically aligned nanopillars uniformly distributed in the superconducting YBCO matrix. Detailed microstructure and strain studies including x-ray diffraction, cross-section and plan-view transmission electron microscopy, and geometric phase analysis reveal that, as the BSO doping concentration varied from 2 mol% to 20 mol%, the nanopillar density increased from 0.26 × 1011/cm2 to 1.44 × 1011/cm2 while the diameter of the nanopillars remains relatively constant (7–8 nm in diameter). The strain state of the YBCO matrix is affected by both lateral and vertical lattice strains; while, the BSO lattice is strongly tuned by YBCO rather than the substrate. A high-density array of dislocations in the order of 1013/cm2 was observed along the vertical heterogeneous interfaces throughout the YBCO film thickness for all doping concentrations.

The gabbroic Portrush Sill in Northern Ireland, part of the North Atlantic Igneous Province, intruded Lower Jurassic mudstones and siltstones about 55 Ma ago. We used petrologic observations and geochemical analyses to study how the sill interacted with the sedimentary rocks. Field relationships show that an Upper Sill and numerous associated Minor Intrusions were emplaced in the sedimentary host rocks before intrusion of the Main Sill, some 10 m above its upper contact. Geochemical analyses reveal two magma contamination processes: Nb and Ta anomalies, coupled with incompatible element enrichment, record contamination by deep crustal rocks, whereas Li, Pb and Ba anomalies reveal a superficial contamination through fluid circulation at the contact between magmatic and sedimentary rocks. Analysis of mineral assemblages and geochemical data from the contact aureole demonstrate uniform metamorphic conditions between the two main intrusions and an absence of a thermal gradient. The identification of pyrrhotite by magnetization analyses and of orthopyroxene by microprobe analyses indicates very high temperatures, up to 660°C. Thermal modelling explains these temperatures as the coupled effects of the Main Sill and the earlier intruded Upper Sill and Minor Intrusions. Even though the chemical composition of the Main Sill suggests another type of parental liquid, all three units were emplaced in a very short time, certainly less than five years.

The influence of incorporating nanoparticulate additions into Ca3Co4O9 (CCO) thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition using composite targets of CCO and CCO + 3wt% BaZrO3 (BZO) on Si and LaAlO3 substrates is investigated. X-ray data and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy reveal preferred c-axis orientation of the films deposited on Si substrates with the formation of nanoparticles between ∼ 10 – 50 nm. Preliminary thermoelectric behavior shows an enhancement of the power factor α2/ρ at room temperature. The microstructure and thermoelectric behavior of the CCO films are compared to the BZO-doped films.

Summary
Introduction
Classic analyses of gorilla systematics by Coolidge (1929) and Groves (1970) form a vital foundation for virtually all contemporary studies of gorillas (see also important morphological studies by Albrecht et al., this volume; Groves, this volume; Haddow and Ross, 1951; Vogel, 1961; Sarmiento et al., 1996; Stumpf et al., 1998, this volume). Investigations of Gorilla subspecies diversity also inform many other fields such as paleoanthropology (cf. Albrecht et al., this volume; Lieberman et al., 1988). Despite a good understanding of variation within this species, theoretical advances and new analytical techniques point to a need to reassess our current understanding of gorilla variation. Measures of subspecific variation have important implications for studies of microevolution, ecomorphology, population dynamics, and evolutionary history. Concomitantly, increasing pressures on wild populations underscore the need for a clearer understanding of the structure of subspecific variability in a conservation context (Suter and Oates, 2000).
Therefore, the goal of this analysis is to investigate morphological diversity in gorillas through new measures of variation below the species level. More specifically, this analysis evaluates overall levels of variation within the Gorilla species through application of Wright's Fst to craniometric data (Wright, 1951; 1969; Relethford, 1994). This approach, typically used to measure genetic microdifferentiation, calibrates the degree to which subdivision within populations or species departs from a quantitative expectation of no substructure.

Pulsed laser deposition of Yba2Cu3O7-δ?(YBCO) coated conductors was studied for the range of P(O2) from 120 mTorr to 1200 mTorr, higher than typically used oxygen partial pressures during deposition. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the sensitivity of YBCO film quality to varying P(O2) for scaled-up fabrication of long-length coated conductors. Deposition at high P(O2) (≥?400 mTorr) gave very high and more consistent critical temperatures (Tc ≈?92 ±?0.4 °K) than results obtained at lower oxygen partial pressures (≤?200 mTorr) as determined by magnetic susceptibility measurements. Typically, the lower partial pressures are used although the laser fluence used in this research (3.2 J/cm2) is higher than typical. Transport Jc's were consistantly high for a wide range of oxygen pressures, 5–8 ×?106 A/cm2 at 77 K, self-field for P(O2) = 200–1200 mTorr. These results indicate that pulsed laser deposition of YBCO is relatively insensitive to P(O2) at the higher pressures of oxygen considered.
